The Academic

This page presents one, limited aspect of my character. There is much more to learn about Sam Roth!

Education is a huge part of my life. Yes, I graduated from college, but I always have (and always will) feel at home in the mental, textual, and social realms of the academy.

I am a recent graduate of Beloit College, a very small liberal arts school in Beloit, Wisconsin, birthplace of Broasted™ Chicken. Before that, I went to high school, took part in the illustrious Presidential Classroom program on media and democracy, and studied film at U. of Arts in Philadelphia.

I have a  Lit Studies degree, though have ventured far and wide outside of my discipline, taking courses in: Creative Writing, Philosophy, Sociology, Religious Studies, Anthropology, Accoustics, Astronomy, Cosmology, Contemporary Chinese Art, Chinese Calligraphy, Economics, Political Science, and Balkan Culture. My senior portfolio, published in the Beloit College Archives, is also available to view and download online.

My interests are not limited to the Academy: I was the Web Director for WBCR FM, the entirely student-run radio station. I maintained the website, the blog, the webstream, and helped modernize the station in general. I also helped book bands for the student-run pub, the Coughy Haus and, when I could, rowed crew with the Beloit College Rowing Club.

I also took a semester abroad in Budapest, Hungary. There I took classes in Hungarian language, society, culture, and literature.

During my time abroad, I undertook an independent study on the role of food in Hungarian culture and literature, both classic and contemporary. To do so, I worked with a really inspired young English professor at ELTE named Szabó Máté on constructing a reading list documenting food in Hungarian literature, a list which included traditional poetry, turn of the century classics, absurdist stageplays, and lots of contemporary fiction and poetry. I also photographed every meal I ate, all of which can be found here but I am in the process of moving here. I eventually presented my research to the Eötvös Collégium as a 25-minute presentation which included, but was not limited to, the slides below. A rewarding educational experience as any.
